University Hospitals Plymouth (UHP) is seeking a talented and values driven Chief Operating Officer to join our Board and Executive Team. This is a significant leadership role at the heart of one of the largest specialist acute and teaching hospitals in the South West, serving a population of more than 450,000 people across Devon and Cornwall, with a wider regional reach of two million for specialist services. Based at Derriford Hospital, the COO will hold Board level accountability for the operational delivery of all clinical services. You will lead divisional and directorate teams to ensure safe, effective, and efficient services, meeting national standards and local priorities, while fostering a culture of continuous improvement. This is a role that combines operational grip with system leadership, as UHP continues to play a central role within the Devon Integrated Care System and through Peninsula wide collaborations. As COO, you will work closely with our newly appointed Chief Executive and fellow Executive Directors to translate strategy into operational reality. You will oversee performance against access, quality, safety, and financial standards, and ensure we make best use of our workforce, estates, and digital capability to deliver high quality care. You will also be the Board lead for Emergency Preparedness, Resilience and Response, ensuring the Trust’s services are resilient and well-governed. You would join us at a time of significant change and opportunity, where there is a rare potential for impact. Your leadership will extend beyond the Trust. Building strong and trusted relationships with system partners, regulators, and stakeholders will be critical to delivering integrated services and improving outcomes for our local population, and so we require a COO who is equally adept in the system as they are in providers. We are looking for an outstanding leader with a breath of experience to bring to the role. You will demonstrate a strong track record of delivering performance improvement, financial discipline, and transformation at scale, working alongside clinical leaders to deliver service excellence. You will combine strategic vision with operational delivery expertise, and will be highly credible with colleagues at every level. If you share our values, have the resilience and drive to deliver in a demanding environment, and want to play a leading role in shaping the future of healthcare in Plymouth and beyond, we would be delighted to hear from you.
