Job overview

The Digital Engineering Apprentice will support the design, production and delivery of a variety of engineering projects benefiting the trust through the Digital Futures Lab. The outputs will be utilised by Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust staff, patient groups, and staff from our partners and external organisations. The role will be aligned to the Level 4 Engineering Manufacturing Technician apprenticeship standard

  • The Digital Futures team’s aim is to develop new and innovative products and solutions to enhance both education & training, research outcomes, and service improvement at the Trust. This often includes development of applications, prototypes & packages in a range of technology areas, including XR technologies, artificial intelligence, 360 content creation, app development, 3d scanning & printing, as well as new and emerging tech sectors. Within the digital future team the role will provide input on the design creation and execution of engineering based projects to include but not limited to 3d design, 3d printing and robotics for both internal and external projects
  • To design, prototype and produce engineering based outcomes for the digital innovation lab for a range of different media devices as directed by the Digital Innovation Lead.
  • To develop digital technology solutions for research, education and training across the organisation.
  • The post holder will apply digital technologies to outcomes for the benefit of staff across the acute and community sites as well as patients.
  • To measure the impact of sustainability and environmental efficiency and how such matters influence manufacturing decisions as well as reporting on cost saving achieved through output.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

 

Communication and working relationships

  • Effectively communicating with colleagues, customers, and other stakeholders. 
  • Collaborating with other apprentices and professionals.
  • Work within and support the Digital Futures team in working towards objectives, project deadlines and innovation outcomes.

• Liaises with a number of staff groups, potential stakeholders and clients in relation

to Digital Innovation across the trust, particularly around XR Technologies.

 

• Attend meetings, via MS Teams, internal to the organisation to discuss work and

projects that the digital innovation team is supporting.

 

• Day to day contact with a variety of staff, service users and partners.

 

• The post holder may be a point of contact for the innovation lab (Digital Futures team), for example a project request comes into the digital futures email inbox.

 

• Act as an ambassador for digital innovation and development across the trust with support of the team

 

• Assist DF team members to provide advice, guidance, encouragement and support on the use of technology to staff involved in facilitating it’s adoption.

 

 

Planning and organisation

• Support direction to Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust in the

promotion, understanding, managing, researching, support or application of

digital interventions and technologies

 

• Assist in the development and facilitation of innovation projects by taking and

interpreting briefs from both team lead and interfacing with

relevant staff groups.

 

• Assist with monitoring project progress and working towards deadlines.

 

• Maintain, update and prepare devices, prior to going out to departments/staff, to

ensure smooth rollout of application.

 

• Maintain own calendar and schedule that compliments and supports the Digital Futures Team

 

• Actively keep abreast of developments within the digital landscape

 

Physical skills

 Ability to use, carry, set up and maintain a range of technology and equipment.

 

 

Patient and client care

  • Interaction with patients involved in co-design with clinical supervision.

 

Policy and service development

 

• Requires awareness and understanding of Trust policies and values for interacting

and representing digital team within the role.

• Be respectful and sensitive towards intellectual insight and intellectual property

that the role may be exposed to working on certain projects and within the R&D

aspect of the wider digital team

• Positively promote the work of the Trust with external clients, stakeholders and

partners

• Responsible for digital equipment and software licenses used to fulfil the role.

 

 

Finance, equipment and other resources

• Assist the Digital Innovation Lead as needed to maintain equipment, software & technical infrastructure for the service to remain functional.

• Assist access and correct operation of digital technologies as

part of the wider Digital Horizons team.

• Does not have budgetary responsibility.

 

 

People management and training (previously named as ‘Responsibility for supervision, leadership and management’)

 

• Sensible approach towards recording own workload and work times for manager.

 

• The post holder will be required to show initiative and ability to make

progress on projects independently, but with regular catch ups and oversight from

Digital Innovation Lead.

 

• The post holder will be required to support new T-level placements, through skills and knowledge exchange as well as supporting admin tasks.

 

• The post holder will be proactive and keen to help shape the future direction and

theme of the digital health service, with genuine opportunity for growth and

innovative thinking.

 

  • Consider the impact of sustainability and environmental efficiency and how such matters influence manufacturing decisions in relation to outcomes

 

 

Information technology and administrative duties

 

• Looking after own IT and digital equipment

• Recording working hours, calendar, achievements and outcomes

• Looking after software licenses specific for the role & identifying additional tools

which could improve the service

• Proficiency of using core digital production software

• Keep abreast of new and emerging digital technology

 

 

Research and development

  • Projects undertaken by the post holder will be evaluated through collaboration with the Technologies Research Programme Manager within the Digital Futures team

 

Freedom to act (previously named as ‘Responsibility and accountability’)

  • The role will act under the supervision of the Clinical Lead and Digital Innovation lead, but will required to make design decisions as necessary.
