Job Title: Head of Production Engineering
Location: Plymouth, Devon
Hours: Monday – Friday, 39 hours a week
About the Role: Are you a strategic leader with a passion for engineering excellence and operational efficiency? We’re looking for a dynamic Head of Production Engineering to lead our production engineering function and drive innovation, quality, and continuous improvement across our manufacturing operations.
Responsibilities
Lead and manage the Production Engineering team, overseeing day-to-day operations and ensuring alignment with strategic objectives.
Mentor and support the professional development of production engineers, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
Identify and implement best practices in manufacturing processes, material utilisation, and tooling to enhance efficiency and quality.
Demonstrate deep expertise in assembly processes, including accurate assessment of time and resource requirements.
Develop precise manufacturing costings using sound economic principles, including robust payback and ROI calculations.
Collaborate closely with the production team to ensure engineering processes meet industry standards and support operational excellence.
Apply advanced knowledge of welding techniques—including spot, projection, MIG, TIG, and robotic welding—to support process development and troubleshooting.
What We’re Looking For
Education
Degree in Engineering or equivalent professional experience.
Management qualification or BEng in Mechanical / Manufacturing Engineering, or equivalent time-served role.
Experience
Proven ability to identify and implement best practices in manufacturing processes, material utilisation, and tooling.
Strong understanding of assembly processes and the ability to accurately assess time and resource requirements.
Demonstrated experience in developing manufacturing costings based on economic principles, including precise payback calculations.
Knowledge
Solid background in engineering leadership and team management.
Knowledge of sheet metal manufacturing processes is highly desirable.
Effective people management skills, with experience supervising production teams and overseeing daily operations.
Ability to mentor and guide junior production engineers, supporting their professional development.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a hands-on approach to process improvement.
